PTE Score Breakdown
Score range: 10–90 per skill. Overall score is an average across all four communicative skills. SDS Canada requires a minimum overall of 60.
Why Students Fail PTE
Understanding these pitfalls is the first step to avoiding them — and EduQuest makes sure you never fall into any of them.
Underestimating Speaking Fluency
PTE's AI scorer is unforgiving with hesitations, filler words and unnatural pacing. Students who don't practise out loud consistently score poorly in Speaking, dragging their overall band down.
High ImpactPoor Essay Structure in Writing
Many test-takers treat the 20-minute essay as a free-write exercise. Without a clear intro-body-conclusion structure and academic vocabulary, PTE's algorithm assigns a low score regardless of ideas.
Very CommonIgnoring Enabling Skills
Grammar, vocabulary, spelling and oral fluency are scored separately. Candidates who focus only on the four communicative skills miss the enabling skill scores that pull their overall band below their target.
Often MissedInsufficient Mock Test Practice
Students who only study concepts but never attempt full, timed mock tests are blindsided by the real exam's pace and question variety. Simulated practice is non-negotiable for a high score.
Preparation GapNot Understanding the AI Scoring
Unlike human-marked tests, PTE uses AI algorithms. Students who don't know what the algorithm rewards — pronunciation, content score, discourse markers — cannot strategise effectively for each task type.
Strategy IssuePoor Time Management
Spending too long on one question type — particularly Re-order Paragraphs or Fill in the Blanks — leaves students rushing through Listening tasks. Section-specific timing strategies are essential.
Time PressureWhy Choose PTE Academic?
PTE Academic offers distinct advantages over other English proficiency tests — from faster results to broader global acceptance.
Results in 5 Business Days
Unlike IELTS which takes up to 13 days, PTE delivers your official score report within five working days — critical when visa deadlines are tight.
Completely AI-Scored — Zero Bias
Every response is graded by Pearsons AI engine. No human subjectivity means the same accent or writing style scores consistently across all test attempts.
Valid for Canada SDS Visa
Since August 2023, PTE Academic (at authorised centres) with an overall score of 60 qualifies under Canada Student Direct Stream — unlocking faster study permits.
360+ Test Days, 200+ Centres
With over 200 test centres worldwide including 35 in India, and tests available on more than 360 days a year, scheduling is never a barrier.
Unlimited Score Sends — Free
Send your PTE score to an unlimited number of institutions without any additional fee — a major advantage over IELTS and TOEFLs per-institution charges.
All 4 Skills Tested in One Sitting
Speaking, Writing, Reading and Listening are all assessed in approximately two hours in a single session — no split-day scheduling, no partial cancellations.
PTE Score Structure
Scores range from 10 to 90. Understanding the structure helps you target exactly what you need for your destination.
Speaking
Scored on oral fluency, pronunciation and content. AI measures rhythm, stress and natural pacing in your spoken responses.
Writing
Assessed on grammar, vocabulary, spelling, written discourse and content. Essays and summaries are both included here.
Reading
Tests comprehension, vocabulary range and the ability to interpret and reorganise written academic information.
Listening
Evaluates the ability to interpret, analyse and synthesise spoken English in academic lecture and conversation contexts.
PTE Exam Pattern
The PTE Academic test lasts approximately 2 hours and is divided into three main sections.
Personal Introduction
A brief unscored introduction recorded at the start of the test to help institutions understand the candidate.
Read Aloud
Read a text of up to 60 words aloud. Scored on reading and speaking — fluency and pronunciation are key.
Repeat Sentence
Listen to a sentence and repeat it exactly. Tests both listening and speaking simultaneously.
Describe Image
Describe a graph, chart, map or picture in 40 seconds. Tests the ability to convey data accurately in spoken English.
Re-tell Lecture
After listening to a lecture, summarise its key points in 40 seconds. A high-value task for both listening and speaking scores.
Answer Short Question
Listen to a question and give a one or two word answer. Tests everyday vocabulary and listening comprehension.
Summarise Written Text
Read a passage and write a one-sentence summary (5–75 words) in 10 minutes. Tests both reading and writing skills.
Essay (20 Minutes)
Write an argumentative essay of 200–300 words on an academic topic. This is the most heavily weighted writing task.
