HL & SL

IB Chemistry

EduQuest™ offers the best IB® Chemistry training with an IB® certified workforce. Our approach combines deep conceptual understanding with rigorous exam technique, covering all topics in the IB Chemistry syllabus for both HL and SL students.

Core Topics Covered
  • Stoichiometric relationships & mole concept
  • Atomic structure & periodic table trends
  • Chemical bonding & structure (ionic, covalent, metallic)
  • Energetics/Thermochemistry — Hess's Law, Born-Haber cycles (HL)
  • Chemical kinetics — collision theory, rate expressions, reaction mechanisms
  • Chemical equilibrium — Le Chatelier's principle, Ka, Kb, Kw
  • Acids and bases — pH, buffer solutions, titration curves
  • Redox processes & electrochemistry
  • Organic chemistry — functional groups, reaction mechanisms (HL)
  • Measurement, data processing and Internal Assessment (IA) guidance
⚖️HL vs SL Differences
  • HL has additional topics including further organic chemistry and spectroscopic identification
  • HL requires deeper mathematical treatment in thermodynamics and kinetics
  • HL students sit Paper 3 with optional topic questions
  • Both levels require a lab-based Internal Assessment (IA)
✏️How We Teach It
  • Visual molecular models & interactive simulations
  • Past paper walkthrough with marking scheme analysis
  • IA topic selection, methodology and write-up support
  • Dedicated sessions for Data Booklet proficiency
⚠️Why Students Struggle
  • Confusing organic mechanisms without visual aids
  • Poor IA methodology leading to lost marks
  • Weak maths foundations affecting calculations
  • Not practising Paper 1 MCQs under timed conditions

Why IB Students Fail — And How We Fix It

Understanding the root causes of underperformance is the first step to a 7. EduQuest's curriculum is specifically designed to address every one of these pitfalls.

😰

Weak Conceptual Foundation

Students rush through theory to practise questions, but IB exams reward deep understanding. Without a solid foundation, every exam paper becomes a guessing game.

We build concepts first, always — before any exam technique.

📝

Poor IA & EE Performance

Internal Assessments and the Extended Essay account for a significant portion of marks. Many students treat them as afterthoughts, costing them crucial points.

⏱️

Exam Time Mismanagement

Running out of time mid-paper is one of the most common causes of lost marks. Students who haven't practised under timed conditions leave answers incomplete.

🗂️

Ignoring Command Terms

IB exams use precise command terms — "describe," "explain," "evaluate," "discuss." Students who don't know the difference write the wrong answer type and lose marks.

📉

Insufficient Past Paper Practice

Familiarity with past paper question styles is crucial. Students who study theory without practising exam questions are unprepared for the specific way IB tests knowledge.

Last-Minute Cramming

IB content is too vast to cram. Students who don't follow a structured, spaced-repetition revision plan find themselves overwhelmed when it matters most.

Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to the most common questions about IB, our coaching and how to get started with EduQuest.

The IB Diploma Programme is a two-year pre-university curriculum for students aged 16–19. Students study six subjects across different groups, write an Extended Essay, complete a Theory of Knowledge (TOK) course and participate in CAS (Creativity, Activity, Service). The maximum score is 45 points (42 from subjects + 3 bonus from TOK/EE).

Higher Level (HL) subjects have more content, greater depth and more complex assessments than Standard Level (SL). Students must take at least 3 HL and 3 SL subjects. HL is generally recommended for subjects relevant to your university major. Universities often require HL passes with specific grades for competitive courses.

Each subject is graded 1–7. The final score combines six subject grades (max 42) plus up to 3 bonus points from TOK and the Extended Essay, giving a maximum of 45. A score of 24 or above (with passing grades) typically earns the IB Diploma. The world average is around 30.

The IB is broadly comparable in difficulty but distinctive in its breadth — IB students study more subjects simultaneously. The Internal Assessment, Extended Essay and TOK add components that A-Level and AP don't require. Many students find the IB more holistic and better preparation for university independent learning.

The IB Diploma is accepted by over 5,000 universities in more than 150 countries, including Oxford, Cambridge, Harvard, MIT, NUS, and virtually all top Indian universities under the study abroad pathways. Many universities have specific IB score requirements for individual courses.
